Production History
Oasis, led by the Gallagher brothers—Noel and Liam—had already begun to make waves in the Manchester music scene with their charismatic swagger and powerful live performances. Signed to Creation Records in 1993, the band immediately began work on their debut album. The initial recording sessions, however, were far from smooth.
Troubled Sessions
The band’s first attempts to record Definitely Maybe at Monnow Valley Studio in Wales were met with disappointment. Producer Dave Batchelor failed to capture the raw energy of the band's live sound. Frustrated, Noel Gallagher described the early versions as “limp and lifeless.” Determined to salvage the project, the band turned to producer Mark Coyle, and Owen Morris (mixing the album in Jonny Marrs Studio in Manchester), who brought an aggressive, layered approach to the album. Using techniques like overdubbing to thicken the sound and compressing Liam’s vocals to enhance their punch, Morris succeeded in crafting a record that exploded with the power and attitude Oasis had envisioned.
The Build-Up to Release Day
Months before its release, Oasis had begun to build a devoted following. Their early singles, Supersonic and Shakermaker, hinted at their potential and stirred excitement in the press. The release of Live Forever in August 1994 proved to be the tipping point. The song became an anthem of hope and defiance, climbing to number 10 on the UK Singles Chart and solidifying Oasis as a band to watch.
By the time Definitely Maybe was ready to drop, the buzz was deafening. The band's unapologetic confidence and their now-famous declaration of wanting to be “the biggest band in the world” made headlines. Critics and fans alike eagerly awaited the album, which promised a raw and unfiltered expression of working-class dreams and frustrations.
Release Day
Upon its release on August 29, Definitely Maybe became the fastest-selling debut album in UK history, shifting over 86,000 copies in its first week. It debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart and went on to sell over 8 million copies worldwide.

Legacy
Nearly three decades later, Definitely Maybe is still celebrated as one of the greatest debut albums of all time. Its influence can be seen in the works of countless bands that followed, and it remains a cornerstone of 1990s rock music.
