Whisky a Go Go: A Night to Forget? (I don't think so)
On September 29, 1994, Oasis performed at the Whisky a Go Go, a storied venue on LA’s Sunset Strip. Known for its intimate yet electrifying atmosphere, the Whisky had hosted legends like The Doors and Guns N’ Roses. However, the night turned sour for Oasis, as the combination of substance-fuelled antics and sibling rivalry boiled over. Liam Gallagher’s erratic behaviour onstage pushed Noel to the brink, leading to an explosive argument after the show.
The Meltdown and the Escape
Following the altercation, Noel abruptly left the band and headed to San Francisco to clear his head. Here, he encountered a pivotal figure in his life and career—Melisa Lim. The meeting offered Noel a moment of solace and introspection, which proved crucial in shaping his creative direction during this tumultuous period.
He sought refuge at Lim's apartment in San Francisco, where she provided support and encouragement. Lim recalls, "He was very upset. I took him in, fed him and tried to calm him down. He wanted to break up the band."

During this period, Lim and Noel spent time together exploring the city, listening to music, and visiting parks. She persuaded him to reconsider his decision to leave Oasis, emphasizing the band's potential. Lim stated, "San Francisco has a reputation of being a place where bands come to die, like The Band and the Sex Pistols. I wasn't going to let it happen on my watch. I told him, 'You can't leave the band — you're on the verge of something big.'"
Their interactions during this time inspired Noel to write "Talk Tonight," a song expressing gratitude for her support. The lyrics reference experiences they shared, such as enjoying strawberry lemonade, which Lim often brought back during their time together. The song includes the line, "All your dreams are made of strawberry lemonade.
"Talk Tonight" and Other Gems
But "Talk Tonight" was just one of several songs born from this period of reflection and uncertainty. Tracks like "Half the World Away" and "Listen Up" also emerged, showcasing a softer, more contemplative side of Noel’s song writing. These songs would later feature prominently on The Masterplan, a collection of B-sides that became a cornerstone of Oasis’s legacy.
Despite the significant impact she had on Noel and the band's trajectory, Lim and Noel eventually lost contact. In the 2016 documentary "Supersonic," Noel mentioned that he couldn't recall her name or appearance, stating, "If I close my eyes now, I can't even picture the girl. I can't remember her name."
Lim's influence extended beyond "Talk Tonight." She reportedly inspired other songs and even contributed to the naming of Oasis's second album. Lim would answer Noel's calls with the phrase, "What's the story, morning glory?" This greeting is believed to have inspired the title of the band's acclaimed album "(What's the Story) Morning Glory?"
Reunion and Revival
Noel’s time with Lim gave him the clarity he needed to reconcile with his bandmates. Within days, he rejoined Oasis, and the group resumed their meteoric rise. The band went on to release Definitely Maybe in August 1994, cementing their place in music history, and began work on their follow-up, the iconic Morning Glory.
Although Noel and Lim eventually lost touch, her impact remains a celebrated part of Oasis lore. In the 2016 documentary Supersonic, Noel admitted he could no longer recall Lim’s name or appearance, saying, "If I close my eyes now, I can’t even picture the girl. I can’t remember her name." However, the songs she inspired remain as enduring reminders of her influence during one of the band’s darkest hours.
Lim’s brief yet pivotal role in Oasis’s history illustrates the profound impact one person can have on music and culture. Her kindness, insight, and encouragement helped not only to salvage a band on the brink of collapse but also to shape the emotional depth of their music, leaving an indelible mark on the legacy of Britpop.
