Lyrics
I hate the way that you've taken back
Everything you've given to me
And the way that you'd always say
It's nothing to do with me
Different versions of many men
Come before you came
All their questions were similar
The answers just the same
I'm gonna get me a motor car
Maybe a Jaguar
Maybe a plane or a day of fame
I'm gonna be a millionaire
So can you take me there
Wanna be wild 'cause my life's so tame
Here am I
Going nowhere on a train
Here am I
Growing older in the rain
Hey'ey
Hey'ey
Hey'ey
I hate the way that you've taken back
Everything you've given to me
And the way that you'd always say
It's nothing to do with me
Different versions of many men
Come before you came
All their questions were similar
The answers just the same
I'm gonna get me a motor car
Maybe a Jaguar
Maybe a plane or a day of fame
I'm gonna be a millionaire
So can you take me there
Wanna be wild 'cause my life's so tame
Here am I
Going nowhere on a train
Here am I
Growing older in the rain
Here am I
Going nowhere on a train
Here am I
Gettin' lost and lonely
Sad and only
Why sometimes
Does my life feel so tame?
Hey'ey
Hey'ey
Hey'ey

Notes
Noel Gallagher wrote "Going Nowhere" in the early 1990s, before Oasis had a record deal and well before their rise to fame, possibly as early as 1990 when he was still working as a roadie for Inspiral Carpets.
The lyrics reflect his pre-fame aspirations and daydreams of wealth and escape from a mundane life, with lines like "I'm gonna get me a motor car / Maybe a Jaguar / Maybe a plane or two" imagining what he'd do with a "shitload of money" once signed. It captures a sense of restlessness and irony, as Noel later noted it was about feeling "wild 'cos my life's so tame," written during a time when success seemed distant but tantalizingly possible.
Musically, the song pays homage to Burt Bacharach, one of Noel's songwriting heroes, with its lush, orchestral arrangement and melancholic tone—similar to how Bacharach influenced other Oasis tracks like "Half the World Away." Noel has expressed regret over some lyrics, like wishing for better rhymes for "car" and "Jaguar," but the track's themes of hemmed-in stardom and impending decline add a prescient, bleak edge, especially in hindsight.
In interviews around The Masterplan's release, Noel described it as an old idea dusted off spontaneously after Be Here Now's heavy production, recording it quickly with drummer Alan White in an afternoon for a lighter feel.
Going Nowhere was recorded during the 1997 Be Here Now sessions at Ridge Farm Studio but held back as a B-side, debuting on September 22, 1997, alongside "(I Got) The Fever" and "My Sister Lover" on the "Stand by Me" single.
It took about seven years from writing to recording, a delay Noel attributed to simply not getting around to it earlier despite its age. The track later appeared on the 1998 B-sides compilation The Masterplan, where it was praised as one of Oasis's strongest non-album cuts. A demo version surfaced on the 2016 remastered Be Here Now deluxe edition.
Despite its quality, "Going Nowhere" has been described as an underrated gem, with fans and critics noting its dark sentiment and superior songcraft compared to some album tracks—ranking highly in lists of Oasis's best songs. It was never a live staple for the band, though Paul Weller, a friend and influence, has cited it as one of his favourite Oasis songs.
The track encapsulates the transitional, excess-fuelled period of Oasis's career, bridging their early raw ambition with the bloated production of their mid-'90s peak.
