The Masterplan
Released on November 2, 1998, The Masterplan is a compilation album by Oasis that gathers some of the bands most cherished B-sides. Widely regarded as one of the finest collections of non-album tracks in rock history, The Masterplan showcases the depth of Noel Gallaghers song writing and Oasis creative prowess during their 1990s peak.
The Concept
While B-sides are traditionally considered filler material, Oasis flipped the script. Noel Gallagher famously treated B-sides with the same care and attention as A-sides, resulting in tracks that often rivalled or even surpassed the quality of their main releases. The Masterplan was conceived as a way to bring these hidden gems to a wider audience, especially in markets like the U.S., where many fans lacked access to Oasis singles.
The title track, “The Masterplan,” encapsulates the albums ethos—a sweeping, orchestral anthem about fate, destiny, and regret. As Noel put it: “Its probably the best song I've ever written.”
